The medieval town, with closepacked stone houses,narrow wandering streets and pitoresque squares, developed in a protected bay an islet, later joined to the mainland. Valuable buildings and monuments, especially from Roman rule, have been preserved in the town and its surroundings. Umag is a modern holiday resort, a motor sport, cultural and sports centre, where the international tennis tournament Croatia Open takes place every year.
